TUNA TIME CHARTER// MORE LIKE A WAHOO TIME!!!!
As some of you may remember I posted last Thursday about wanting to go on a offshore charter and wanted to know if anyone had an open spot. Well, shortly after posting, I got a call from a guy wanting to know if I wanted to fill a spot for them. I said I wanted in and that’s were our story begins. First off originally we were supposed to fishwith Capt. Lance Walker, but due to reasons out of his control we ended up going with Capt. Ed Freaky. This by the way is by far the best charter Capt. I have ever had the chance to fish with!! And I’ve fished with a bunch from Coast Rica to Texas!! Upon arriving at the boat Capt. Ed asked if were willing to take a chance and go catch some Wahoo instead of grinding it out at the lump with the other 80 or so boats. We all agreed and off towards the river we ran. After making quick bait for some later deep drops for Grouper and AJ’s we began trolling. Not even 5 minutes into our first pass a double Wahoo hook up and things are starting to get rowdy!! With a relieved Capt, the radio was cranked bean bags put up front and all of us staring at a sounder lit up with fish like a christmas tree!! I think this is the point that we knew this was going to be special day. Troll another round same area bam a balckfin hits our marauder. (Later to be Mako bait, but be patient!!) A little farther bam another double Hoo’s and these are solid!! Time for a little break from trolling for a little bottom fishing, a few nice grouper a nice snapper (my personal best released), and a lot of lost tackle we were back on the prowl for Wahoo. Next couple of hours were nothing short of madness. We couple have easily and I’m not lying put 20+ wahoo in the boat, but what’s the point?? Doubles, triples, and the culmination of the day a quad hookup of really nice Wahoo!! With a whole lot of screaming going on around the boat a lot of razzing and many laughs three were gaffed and high fives all around. Well, guess who’s still fighting their fish(That would be me and my arms were jello at this point) when it starts acting really eratic on the surface, when at about ten feet behind the boat an est. 500+ Mako eats the whole thing. I’m talking the whole thing, not bit it in half, or a chunk. THE WHOLE THING!! Then all I can remember is the hearing MAKO MAKO MAKO and a whole lot of commotion!! Clearing a big work area the blackfin comes out the shark wire is tied on. Time for battle!! Hook the chunk on throw it out maybe six feet from the boat and watch this majestic beast circle e few times then eat the chunk only to have it pull!! New chunk a little chum and here he comes again. Set the hook and a short battle ensues, only to pull the hook again. Capt. Ed was torn up but I think the crew was thrilled to just see it all happen!! After all this it’s about 3:30 or so time to go home right?? NOPE!! We hit a few marks on the GPS we marked while trolling and hit pay dirt on the grouper and AJ’s. AJ’s weren’t that big but at this point no one had the arms to do big battle. We boated probably 10 or so grouper in like 20 minutes until everyone sat down and couldn’t take it anymore. Got to watch the mate Chad work a little scamp which would have been great to show us before the trip started. Probably would have saved a lot of sore arms!! Now give a chance to plug Capt. The boys from Marksville, THANKS A TON FOR INVITING ME ABOARD AND THANKS CAPT. ED and CHAD FOR A GREAT DAY IN LOUSIANA WATERS!! I’LL NEVER CHARTER OUT OF STATE AGAIN EXCEPT FOR A TARPON BUT I KNOW WE GOT THOSE HERE TOO!! LOUISIANA WHAT AN AWESOME PLACE!!!
